DEBUNKR – ART DIRECTION

I designed the DEBUNKR brand and its style guide for the YouTuber “Second Thought.” Unlike the political content he’s currently known for, the early days of his channel were focused on inoffensive, fun-fact science content. As his interest in covering politics grew, he sought an outlet for debunking misinformation, and he thought that a new YouTube channel would be necessary for covering those more divisive political topics. Second Thought commissioned me for the project and loved my work on this. He provided the “DEBUNKR” name, and I provided everything else. However… on second thought… he ultimately decided that the simplest solution would be for him to refocus his existing channel towards political content, allowing it to serve much the same purpose as DEBUNKR would have.

LOGOS

I chose the image of an upside down American flag for two reasons.

  1. It’s seldom seen in pop culture or daily American life, and can thus appear provocative to some at first glance. That provocation is useful for bringing attention to the brand.
  2. The upside down flag is actually our national sign of distress (a feeling on which all political parties can agree).

INSPIRATION BOARD

I created this inspiration board before conceptualizing the DEBUNKR logo and brand. Evaluating existing brands helps me to find a fitting aesthetic. I knew that I wanted DEBUNKR to feel edgy, but not revolutionary or anti-American. I also wanted it to appeal to a younger, online audience.

STYLE GUIDE

I make style guides for each of my logo and brand design projects. They vary in detail and length, but it’s always a good idea to educate clients on the proper display use of their new brand identity.
