SENIOR PROJECT – “The Wishes of Colby Stevens”
For my Fall 2015 Graphic Design senior project I rebranded “The Wishes of Colby Stevens,” which is an ongoing book series by film critic turned novelist and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill. Currently, the series includes two books, “Dreams and Shadows” (published in 2013) and “Queen of the Dark Things” (published in 2014). They are the first two novels by Cargill. Hailed as a dark, urban fairytale for grown ups in the same vein as Neil Gaiman and Guillermo Del Torro, these books mix in mythology, history, fairy lore, monsters and demons, and are set in a present day Austin, Texas, with much of the sequel taking place in the Australian outback. Due to the violent and philosophically intriguing reputation “The Wishes of Colby Stevens” has garnered so far, it’s target demographic is between 18 to 30 year old men. There is a misconception, however, that books of the Urban Fantasy genre are for children, so my primary goal was to increase the series’ appeal to it’s desired, older demographic. I did this by advertising and designing “The Wishes of Colby Stevens” series in a way that emphasized mature content from the books, its heavy Western influence and subtext, and an overall dark tone.
